Obergurgl is a village in the Ötztal Alps in Tyrol, Austria, in the municipality of Sölden, the district of Imst, with 564 inhabitants. Gurgl is located in the Oetztal Alps near the main Alpine ridge . There are many peaks up to 3500 m high and more glaciers, including the largest the Gurgler Ferner. Together with its neigbourgs, it forms part of the ski resort area of Obergurgl-Hochgurgl and lies at the southern end of the Ötztal Gurglertal valley, the longest side valley off the Inntal valley.Obergurgl became famous in 1931, when the Swiss explorer August Piccard was forced to land on the nearby glacier during his historic balloon flight.He had to spend one night ther before being salvaged. Since then, Obergurgl has become one of the most famous resorts of Austria, gaining the surname of “diamond of the Alps”.
It is a place where the fun of being outdoors mingle with the breathtaking view of the Alpine scenery and with the joy and tradition of the locals.It is a great place of spending a stress-free vacation in a gorgeous location in the mountains.The ski resort of Hochgurgl is connected with that in Obergurgl by a cable car. From the highest point of the ski area, the 3082 m high Wurmkogel , you have a comprehensive view of the mountains North and South Tyrol. |
