Grossarl (Großarl) is a market town in the St. Johann im Pongau district in the state of Salzburg, in the Grossarltal valley, at an altitude of 924 m. It has an area of 130 km2. The neighboring communities of Großarl are in the east Kleinarl, in the south Hüttschlag, in the west the two Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein, the northern valley exit Schwarzach, the district capital St. Johann im Pongau and Wagrain. The Grossarl Valley is a foothill of the Radstadt Tauern and separates the Hohen von der Niederen Tauern. It stretches from the Arlscharte (2,252 m) via Hüttschlag (1,030 m), Großarl (924 m) and the Lichtensteinklamm. It is is 27 km long from the Keeskogel to the Salzach estuary.Today the main activity is the tourism. The merger with the Gastein valley and the founding of the ski resort Großarltal-Dorfgastein initiated an upswing for the entire economy in Großarl. As a result, many infrastructure improvements have been made and many necessary facilities have been created for the population. Since then, Grossarl has experienced a rapid development - mainly through tourism.Grossarl is the place to be if you are looking for a vacation in the nature. The ski area Großarltal-Dorfgastein has about 80 slopes with five gondolas, eight chairlifts and five ski lifts. It stretches over the Kreuzkogel, from 885 m at Großarl up to 2027 m altitude, where the connection to the Gastein valley to Dorfgastein is. The transport capacity is around 29,000 people per hour. Every year numerous races of the Salzburg Landesskiverband take place in Großarl.
