Berchtesgaden (Central Bavarian: Berchtsgoan) is a municipality in the German Bavarian Alps. It is located in the south district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria,near the border with Austria, 30 km south of Salzburg. Watzmann, at 2,713 m, is the third-highest mountain in Germany (after Zugspitze and Hochwanner).The Kehlstein is a 1,834 m subpeak of the Hoher Goell , a mountain in the Bavarian Alps. It is the location of the famous Kehlsteinhaus(Eagle's Nest). Much of Berchtesgaden's wealth has been derived from its salt mines, the first of which started operations in 1517.
Berchtesgaden is situated in the province of Bayern and has a community of 7.649 inhabitants.
Visitors enjoy the art and culture of the area's numerous museums, exhibits and concerts. The historical town center boasts decorated churches and the Royal Palace. Perched on a hillside is the famous pilgrimage church of Maria Gern, a Baroque jewel set in an exquisite alpine jewel box. Also, tourists can enjoy practicing a lot of sports in the mountain area.In the middle of the 19th century thanks to its attractions and natural monuments, Berchtesgaden turned into a tourist destination with a rapidly growing number of visitors. The boom continued after the Second World War. Since the 1990s, the community seeks to ecology and environmentally-friendly tourism to profile.
