St. Vith (German: Sankt Vith; French: Saint-Vith; Luxembourgish: Sankt Väit) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Liège, and in the German speaking Community of Belgium. It is located in the southeastern part of the country. It is included in the German speaking community. It was named after Saint Vitus. It was an important marketplace in the 12th century. It became town in 1350. It was part of Luxembourg until the defeat of Napoleon. It was transferred to Belgium in 1925, by the Treaty of Versailles. It is the setting for Michael Oren's novel, Reunion.
St. Vith is part of the Eastern Townships common (called redeemed cantons of Eupen and Malmedy) that were offered to Belgium by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 as compensation for losses during the First World War and also to give Belgium a territory to increase eastward, in the hills of the Eifel in order to allow a military forward defense of Liège and northern Ardennes. The municipality is counted among the region Belgian Eifel. It is the only city located at 520 m altitude.
