Poperinge is a city and municipality of the West Flanders province of the Flemish region from Belgium. The municipality includes the town of Poperinge and the surrounding villages Krombeke, Proven, Reningelst, Roesbrugge-Haringe and Watou.Poperinge is situated about 8 miles to the west of Ieper/Ypres.
Poperinge, and the area around it is known for growing hops and for providing 80% of Belgian production. The town is home to the national hop museum and is called the hop capital. The local brew is known as Hommel (which means hops in the West Flanders dialect).
The history of the town starts back in the medieval times, leaving traces of that period through some of the towns buildings, like the town's oldest church, Sint-Bertinuskerk.The Count of Flanders, Dietrich of Alsace, granted the town a charter in 1147 at the request of the abbot. From this time it began to thrive as a cloth-making centre. In 1513, at a time of declining prosperity, much of the town was again destroyed by fire and once more in 1563.
Poperinge is twinned with:Zatec in the Czech Republic,;Wolnzach in Germany (center of the Bavarian hops production);Hythe, Kent in England;Berck in Nord-Pas de Calais,
Rixensart in Walloon Brabant, Belgium. |
