De Panne is a town and municipality located in the West Flanders province of Belgium. It is the most western point of the country at the border with France.Situated on the coast of the North Sea, it was home to a lot of famous people. King Albert I and Queen Elizabeth of Belgium lived there during World War I.
De Panne was also a pioneer in land yachts for sports use, that were built and used by the Dumont brothers in 1898.The first Belgian king, Leopold I, sailed to Calais,France from England, and arrived in Belgium in De Panne in 1831. The Leopold I Esplanade, which includes a statue of him, commemorates his arrival.
In this town there are several nature reserves such as the nature reserve De Westhoek (340 ha). Furthermore, there are also the Houtsaegerduinen and Kerkepannebos (86 hectares), the municipal reserve Oosthoek (61 hectares), the Calmeynbos (85 hectares) and the Krakeel Dunes. Between the Calmeynbos and Oosthoekduinen is also the natural center Nightingale with a museum. There one can take long walks. The beach at De Panne has no breakwaters and is the widest of the Belgian coast (450 m at low tide). As a result, De Panne known as an ideal place for sand yachting, also called yachting.
