Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is located in the northwestern part of the country, with an area of 138 km2. The name probably derives from the Old Dutch for "bridge": brugga. It is sometimes referred to as "The Venice of the North". It is also home to the College of Europe, an elite university institute. Its historic city centre is included on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. It has a significant economic importance thanks to its port and was once the chief commercial city in the world. Bruges has most of its medieval architecture intact, making it one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Europe. The Groeningemuseum is a municipal museum in Bruges, with many famous medieval paintings.Bruges is traditionally the starting town for the annual Tour of Flanders cycle event.
