The Åland Islands or Åland is a region of Finland that consists of an archipelago at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. The archipelago consists of nearly three hundred habitable islands, of which about eighty are inhabited.They have an area of 1,527 km2 and a population of 29,000. The main ports are Mariehamn south, Berghamn west and Långnäs . The economy is heavily dominated by shipping, trade and tourism, together with fishing and farming.The main island is Fasta Åland, with about 1,010 km2 and it is the site of the capital town of Mariehamn. The city has an area of 20 km2 and a population of 11,500.It was founded in 1861, around the village of Övernäs, in what was at the time part of the municipality of Jomala. It is the seat of the Government and Parliament of Åland. It has a reputable heritage in shipping. The Flying P-Liner Pommern museum ship and the famous Dutch steamer Jan Nieveen are hosted by the harbor. It has the largest marinas in Scandinavia.
