Lake Nyos is a crater lake in Cameroon. It is one of few lakes saturated with carbon dioxide in this way. Once it suddenly emitted a large cloud of CO2, which killed 1,700 people and their animals in the neighboring villages. To prevent another disaster, a degassing tube was installed in order to release the carbon dioxide in safe quantities into the atmosphere.
